The Jackson Avenue facility is the latest effort of a man who never served in the military but has dedicated 35 years to serving veterans with housing, food, clothing and offering sometimes simply a place to be understood.
“Getting this property was a godsend because it came at just the time when we needed it,” said Alpha Omega Veterans Services Executive Director Cordell Walker. The nonprofit acquired the former Marine Corps Reserve Center at 3114 Jackson Ave. through a federal grant process.
Less than 6% of Alpha Omega Veterans Services’ clients have contracted COVID-19 and only one has died with the virus. Nevertheless, the pandemic poses new challenges for veterans still trying to get grounded in civilian life.
Alpha Omega Veterans Services got in the farm-to-table movement more than a year ago. Now, with its first full growing season unfolding, it's marketing produce and the power of horticultural therapy.
